Every year I try to stay away from the madness of award season and every year I’m sucked into it like a moth to a flame. This year was no different. After a special year in film, after Mad Max won everybody’s heart, after Tom Hardy gave only amazing performances, after Leo wished, prayed and hoped throughout the year; the Oscars delivered and everybody won!
RED CARPET
THE BEST: Margot Robbie, Olivia Wilde, Dorith Mous, Lady Gaga
I think my overall favorite was Margot Robbie’s golden dress! She was so glamorous and stood out from the rest of the looks by a mile! Olivia Wilde’s dress was also great… from the back, where as from the front it was a little too revealing. This black goth dress, worn by Dorith Mous, was the best lace and tulle combination. I have no idea who the woman is but well done! And lastly, I want to include Lady Gaga’s white pant-number because it’s kind of awesome.
THE SO-SO: Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Brie Larson, Naomi Watts
While Cate Blanchett could pull off almost anything, I feel like this dress is maybe just a tiny bit too youthful for her. Though I do love it, for some odd reason, those baby blue flowers look fresh. Rooney Mara always wears goth looks but I feel like this white dress would have worked wonders on somebody else cause it is, up close, really stunning. Minus the belt, Brie Larson’s cobalt blue stood out among the others because well, most of the looks were kind of bad. And lastly, Naomi Watts and her metallic mermaid dress almost looks like it’s out of place, because it should probably be up there, among the best ones.
THE HANDSOME: Jacob Tremblay, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy & Charlotte Riley, Leonardo DiCaprio
Men have it so much easier when it comes to red carpets, but it takes that something extra to stand out. Jacob Tremblay stood out because he is so cute and adorable, plus, he is handling his well deserved attention so maturely! Jared Leto always makes a statement, and this time with red – though the flower seems too much. Tom Hardy and his lovely wife Charlotte Riley get the nod for the most stylish couple on the red carpet and Leo gets a shout out because look how nervous he is before his big ceremony!
THE SHOW
Never have I actually stayed up and watched the whole ceremony cause I always have to work or something, 2016 was no different. So I haven’t really watched the whole show, but I watched clips of it and first up, there was a bear in the audience? Like, why would you mock Leo like that? He hasn’t done or said anything bad, he just has wanted an Oscar so desperately that we have made it into a thing. And now, after he has finally won, he has done so by being teased for no apparent reason. Everybody felt so uncomfortable, Leo especially.
Then there is Chris Rock’s opening monologue. I’m a little meh about it. I liked how he tried to spin the lack of black nominations, but it lacked something special. In other words, it wasn’t my favorite. But it wasn’t bad either. Solid.
Dave Grohl performed Blackbird during the In Memoriam which was simple and beautiful. The emotional clip, that included the forever missed Alan Rickman and David Bowie among many, ended with Leonard Nimoy’s clip from Star Trek saying “I have been and I always shall be your friend.” Perfection.
Some other good stuff, Leo accepted his speech and thanked Tom, adorable! Brie thanked movie-goers, so I feel like she thanked me, so thank you, Brie! Mark Rylance surprisingly won but Mark Ruffalo was so happy for him that I am too.
PS: There is also this funny little video of Leo getting his Oscar engraved, you can tell he is so excited about his win but tries to kind of play it cool.
THE WINNERS
THE TRIFECTA: Spotlight for Best Picture, Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Actor, Brie Larson for Best Actress
For me, these three wins are amazing! Michael Keaton has been in two Best Picture wins back to back, in Birdman last year, and now Spotlight. And for Leo, finally, I think we can all agree, this was a well deserved win for him. Maybe not for this role specifically, but for his career so far in general. But the most sweetest win was definitely Brie Larson taking home that Oscar because she truly was the best actress in her category this year in my opinion!
MAD MAX: FURY ROAD: Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Production Design
But here is the biggest winner of 2016 Oscars, Mad Max: Fury Road. And though the nods for Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography remained just nods, Mad Max was still the best movie of last year! The movie that we all will watch over and over again, the movie that will remain a cult favorite, and a movie that is officially the best looking and best sounding movie of 2015!
FINAL THOUGHTS
And this brings us to my final thoughts, which are simple – a great year for movies has finally put to rest and the award season has ended. I’m quite happy with the results, everybody got their moment to shine, everyone deserved it and I’m glad it all turned out just like it did!

Margot Robbie was my favorite dressed actress of the night too! Stunning!
Truly, golden!!
Margot Robbie was gorgeous! Also really loved Priyanka Chopra and Saoirse Ronan too. So happy to see Leo finally win! 🙂
I sort of liked Chopra’s dress but not that much, and was almost excited by Ronan but she is always a little boring to me, even with the sequence..
Margot was also one of my favorites, but my Best Dressed was easily Saoirse Ronan. I loved Brie’s speech too, how she thanked the festivals and the people who went out to see it. That was nice.
I didn’t particularly like Ronan’s dress.. but I’m very picky as well. I always seem to like the dresses I myself would wear. 😀
And Brie is nice.. I hope she gets bigger roles from now on!
Jason Tremblay is just the CUTEST. I’m also pretty happy with who won what out of the nominees, usually I have one little niggle but I’m pretty content about it.
He is! And I’m also quite content, because every winner sort of deserved it. And we all knew Mad Max was never going to get the big big wins anyway.
