I’m going with another theme within a theme post for this week. I know, I’m getting really good at these! The reasons this week is a little weird though is because these movies aren’t all as good as they should. But I was having a weird week, so here is the weirdness reflected in my today’s picks: platonic friendships in teen movies.
When I first read today’s topic, I thought it said Thirsty Thrillers.. which would have been a very funny theme. Maybe in 2019, I could recommend Thirsty Thrillers as one of the themes. It would require listing boring thrillers that try too hard. But we’re still in 2018, and I am recommending the good ones, the there’s a twist around every corner type thrillers. I’m going with a theme-ish selection by picking three 90’s thrillers with one word titles.
Similar to when I did my list of Sundance favourites, I opted for online lists. There is simply no way I would know or remember if a movie has debuted at Cannes. Since there have been a lot of good ones, I picked three that all revolve around guys and crime.
I went to bed last night and got a weird idea to dedicate this week’s Thursday Movie Picks to Jim Carrey. There’s no actual reason, I just thought about characters making a new start and had this crazy thought! Carrey has portrayed so many men, who found themselves changed through something unnatural or supernatural. Here are four movies, where Carrey’s character makes a new start because of something strange.
This is an exciting week for me because this week’s theme is so much fun! I share shows, that managed to crawl under my skin with just one season, only to be ripped away from me. I’m talking about shows that weren’t that bad, but decent enough. Shows that should have been given a second season. Shows, that I still sometimes wonder about. And I still don’t get how they were cancelled because they weren’t that bad!
With this week’s theme we are going dark. Which is ironic, considering Spring has finally arrived and I myself feel a lot better than a few weeks ago. Yet, my next three recommendations are all three very melancholy movies. All three circle around suicide, suicidal thoughts and those quiet meltdowns, that are even harder to process than the loud ones.
Having such a dejá vu moment with this week’s Thursday Movie Picks theme. The reason, back in December our Across the Universe Podcast topic was exactly the same – movies about movies. So I’m going to cheat a little and post the same list again. If you want to hear more of my thoughts, and find out what other’s picked, feel free to listen to the podcast.
For obvious reasons, the concept of underground makes me think of horror/thriller genre. There is just no way, for instance, a romantic story could or should happen below the ground. That is why, all my picks are a little scary.
Is it me, or does this week’s theme feel like a deja vu? When last week we touched upon our childhood favourites, this Thursday Movie Picks is all about nostalgia. For me, these two are very similar but I am going to spin this week’s theme to my favour. Here are three movies, featuring young people as leads, that make me feel nostalgic about my own youth!
