This Summer has been kind with new TV-shows that are smart, clever and quick on their feet. Weather its features lawyers or the well-known detective Sherlock Holmes. But despite the fact that Holmes has been done oh so many times, this one is a bit different since it has brought the famous duo (cause Sherlock can’t be without Watson) into 21st century. That and the fact the special effects are rather refreshing (phone messages for instance are displayed right on the screen) with clever humor and most enjoyable one-liners from Sherlock make this one of my favorites this Summer. Sadly the show only had 3 x 90 min episodes in its first season but luckily Sherlock is returning soon enough (this fall).
The whole back-story is rather interesting, both creators of the show are writers for Doctor Who (another British show that is very respected) and big fans of Sherlock Holmes. The two talked about the idea while driving in a train (sounds familiar? – J.K. Rowling got the idea for Harry Potter in a train. I should start driving trains more often) and soon after that they started the creating process. The director (of two episodes) Paul McGuigan had an idea of putting text messages on the screen instead of having cut-away shots of a hand holding the phone.[1] Awesome idea as far as I think and the all the visual appearance of the series is rather dark and cold – just the way I like it.
Since the show only has 3 episodes and there are only two main characters it is rather easy to name the actors. Benedict Cumberbatch plays Sherlock and he is quite excellent at it – a little weird and twisted but still a genius. Martin Freeman is his right-hand man Watson who is another well done casting call. The two have great chemistry and it’s no surprise that their landlady thinks they are a couple (which might even happen because the matter of that is left open). So all in all I think this show has done justice to the infamous duo and I’ll be waiting for its return.
